To help us provide the best experience for all of our patients, we ask that you review the following fee policies.
Fee Schedule
-
Late Payment Fee: $20
-
Returned Payment (Insufficient Funds): $25
-
Missed Appointment: $25
-
Cancellation with Less Than 24 Hours' Notice: $25
-
Office Visit Fee: A patient who has completed treatment but wants new adjustments or a patient who requires new retainers may be charged an office visit fee and a replacement retainer fee (charges vary).
-
Excessive Broken Brackets: $20 per bracket after two broken brackets at a single appointment or more than five broken brackets during the course of treatment.
These fees help offset the additional time and materials required when appointments are missed or orthodontic appliances are repeatedly damaged.
Understanding Orthodontic Insurance Benefits
Choosing a dental insurance plan can be confusing, especially when it comes to orthodontic treatment like braces or clear aligners. If you're reviewing your benefits during open enrollment or changing dental plans, here are a few important things to know.
1. Dental insurance doesn't always include orthodontic coverage.
Before choosing a plan, ask:
- Does it include orthodontic coverage?
- Does it cover children, adults, or both?
2. Most plans have a Lifetime Maximum Benefit.
A Lifetime Maximum is the most your insurance will pay toward orthodontic treatment.
Most plans pay 50% of treatment costs, up to the Lifetime Maximum.
Example:
Treatment Cost: $8,500
Insurance Covers: 50% ($4,250)
Lifetime Maximum: $2,000
Although 50% of treatment is $4,250, your insurance will only pay $2,000 because that is the maximum benefit allowed by your plan. You would be responsible for the remaining balance.
3. Benefits are paid over time.
Most orthodontic benefits are paid in installments, not all at once. Insurance usually makes an initial payment when treatment begins, followed by monthly, quarterly, or annual payments.
If possible, keep your dental insurance active throughout treatment. If your insurance changes, ask if the new plan covers work in progress claims.
4. Check for waiting periods.
Some plans require you to wait before orthodontic benefits become available, even if routine dental benefits begin immediately. Be sure to ask if your plan has a waiting period.
5. Can you use two insurance plans?
Often, yes. One plan will be primary and the other secondary. For dependent children, many insurance companies use the Birthday Rule, meaning the parent whose birthday comes first in the calendar year usually has the primary plan.
Also ask if your plans allow coordination of benefits. Some plans combine benefits, while others have a non-duplication clause, which may limit what the secondary plan pays.
6. What if treatment has already started?
If you gain orthodontic coverage after treatment begins, ask whether your new plan covers work in progress. If it does, benefits are often prorated based on the amount of treatment remaining. Let us know about any changes to your insurance as soon as possible.
